Welcome to the Heinzman family heritage project! In the middle of the nineteenth century two brothers three brothers and their families migrated to the United States from the Württemberg area of Germany. They arrived in Pennsylvania where one family stayed; the other two families migrated to Indiana and became prominent in Hamilton and Owen counties. This website attempts to collect the heritage of that Pennsylvania-Hoosier Dutch family.  The family has used various spellings including Hienzman, Heinzmann, Hinzman, and Hinzmann. There are other Heinzman lines and we welcome your stories too – if we’re not related by blood we’re related by name. We are particularly interested in hearing from Heinzmans from the old country.

Scope of this project. Genealogy is an aspect of this project but the emphasis is on oral tradition and culture. We’re interested in the stories that animate our heritage. This blog attempts to collect stories, recipes, beliefs, superstitions, traditions, sayings, and pictures. I am beginning the project by making my mother’s photo’s available – as part of the photo project. I believe the best way to preserve those pictures is to make them available to everyone. I am hoping and counting on your participation – if you are a Heinzman send me your stories and recipes and get those vintage photographs to us.

Goal

The goal is to preserve our heritage – The short term objective is to collect stories, recipes, and pictures and publish them in book format with a print on demand printer so that we can all share our heirloom pictures and legacy.

About the publisher

My name is Kevin Goodman and my mother is a Heinzman. My grandfather was Leo Glenn Heinzman. I was fortunate to have a good friend who was a professional genealogist to get me started but the Heinzman family has been particularly challenging because they migrated from Germany. This project is less about genealogy and more about the substance of who we are – I am interested in stories, recipes, traditions, and culture. Please have a look – if you are a Heinzman or from a related family this project is for you.

I also maintain a separate website for my paternal Goodman heritage and publish a personal website called The Blog Post.

I am the daughter of Owen Heinzman. I enjoyed looking at the pictures. I lived away from Hamilton County most all of my life, so I wasn’t privileged to visit as often with extended family, but I do remember Glenda Kay. We were near the same age. Thanks for taking the time to make this available to everyone!

  2. Kevin Goodman Says:

    Dear Nancy

I sent a picture of Jean and Orval this year on ther 68th wedding ann. on your shutterfly. I have more pictures of graves, Heinzmans and some that you all ready have but I do want to share but not sure the best way.

    Thanks Carla

We sent everybody a letter that we could find with the last name Heinzman, living in Indiana, but I remember mother specifically wanting me to look up Orval and Jean. I’ll be looking forward to the seeing the photographs, we have more to add too. I know managing the time to do such a project is always challenging, so I certainly appreciate the effort. I’ll also be posting instructions for posting directly to this website in the next week or two.

If you have any questions or would like to share – let me know

      Best Wishes,

  6. Carla Crask Says:

Kiki, So how is Sam Heinzman to you? I sent a picture of his grave and I think one of him from my inlaws. Just wanting to put the puzzle together.
    Thanks
    Carla

  7. Penny McUmar Lahr Says:

My grandmother was Minnie Mae Heinzman from New Martinsville, WV. She had a brother Clarence, August and a sister Bertha, married to Albert Reef (not sure of spelling) who lived in Sardis, Ohio. Bertha had no children. My grandmother had 2 sons, John McUmar and William McUmar (who passed away in his 40s).

My father moved to Weirton in the late 50s. I don’t know much about my father’s relatives. I do know Terry Heinzman lives in Weirton but he didn’t even remember his grandfather’s name. I’m guessing it was Clarence.

  8. Penny McUmar Lahr Says:

Minnie was married to McUmar and he passed away in a car accident. Then she was married to Clyde Parsons.
